Mtwara is located in the south eastern part of the country on the Indian Ocean coast. Dominated by the ‘Makonde’ tribe, Mtwara has a busy market where you can pick up the Makonde sculptures. Famous for its large-scale cashew nut farming, Mtwara has also has large investments in massive cement production. Nearby, Mikindani is an attractive bayside town with a sleepy but sweet vibe and some impressive colonial buildings. You are not far from the Mozambique border from here and trips south will bring you to the Ruvuma River for hippo-spotting canoe trips.
